Here are some of the useful sections to check out:
How to Pitch
This section is a collection of interviews with magazine editors about how freelancers get their attention. Even if you’re not interested in working as a freelance writer, the pieces are great sources of information about specific magazines, and good for interview prep. (You can learn a lot about a magazine, and how its editors perceive it, by reading the “How to Pitch” articles.)
J-School Confidential Series
This series of articles is an ongoing one about the pros and cons of going to Journalism school by J-School grads. The articles, which offer varying perspectives on the value of J-school, are good to check out if you’re considering going to grad school.
Classes
Mediabistro also offers classes in a number of major cities -- LA, Boston, DC and New York among them -- on a wide array of topics. There are courses on grammar, screenwriting and a number focusing on different facets of journalism, from investigative to travel writing. While the classes can be pricey -- a multi-week class is often around $500 -- they’re a great way to test the waters to see what interest you. The classes can also help you land clips, which will be necessary for getting a job at a magazine or newspaper, and make connections in the media world. (Most teachers are professionals in their field.)
