Overview

One of the biggest magazine publisher in the world, Time Inc., is under the corporate umbrella of Time Warner (which, among other media properties, owns the film studio Warner Brothers and the comics publisher DC Comics). It publishes titles all over the world and has holding of over 120 magazines including Entertainment Weekly, People, TIME, InStyle, Fortune and Essence.

History

Founded in 1923, Time Inc.’s origins, as you might have guessed, are bound up with the founding of TIME magazine. After Henry Luce and Briton Hadden, Yale classmates and good friends, left their jobs at The Baltimore Sun in 1922, the pair came to New York City to start a new magazine which, a year later, launched as TIME.

After TIME launched the company began to launch a series of other seminal magazines including the now-defunct Life (in 1936), Sports Illustrated (in 1954) and People (in 1974)
