Overview

Hearst Magazines, based in New York City, is one of the world's largest print media publishers. In addition to the various monthly magazines it publishes, it also owns a number of daily newspapers. Among the 17-plus newspapers it publishes are The Houston Chronicle and The San Francisco Chronicle. The company, which is a division of the Hearst Corporation, publishes 19 magazines in the U.S. and a number of titles in the U.K. and Europe.

History

Founded by William Randolph Hearst, whose life story was lightly fictionalized in Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane, Hearst remains one of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. The company is now housed in the architecturally notable building in Manhattan known as the Hearst Tower.

  • O, The Oprah Magazine -- popular women’s magazine founded by talk show queen Oprah Winfrey

  • Good Housekeeping -- originally founded in 1885, this women’s magazine is associated with the well known product testing company, the Good Housekeeping Institute

  • Esquire -- a literary men’s magazine founded in 1933 and known for some of the high end short fiction it’s published; famed editor Gordon Lish worked at the magazine as an editor and published writers like Raymond Carver, Richard Ford and T. Coraghessan Boyle
