History

A subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, News Corp, HarperCollins is headquartered in New York City and has outposts in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and other spots. HarperCollins owns the Christian publisher, Zondervan, as well. Founded in 1817 by two brothers, James and John Harper, its early authors included Mark Twain, Thackeray, Dickens and the Bronte sisters.

Notable Imprints

HC has over 20 adult imprints, as well as a large children’s division.

  • Collins -- Known for business, wellness and other titles this division publishes such authors as Jim Collins (Built to Last and Good to Great) and David Packard (The HP Way).

  • William Morrow -- This imprint is known more for commercial fiction and non-fiction and publishes such bestsellers as Elmore Leonard, John Grogan (Marley and Me), Cokie Roberts, Dennis Lehane and Neil Gaiman.

  • Amistad -- Specializing in books by, and about, people of African descent this imprint publishes authors like Walter Dean Myers, Edward P. Jones and John Steptoe.
  • Avon -- Women’s fiction with an edge toward romance is what this imprint publishes. It authors include Laura Lippman, Joseph Wambaugh and Elizabeth Peters.

  • HarperEntertainment -- The house’s pop culture imprint, it publishes books about entertainment and has also released a number of biographies from people like Rutger Hauer and Eminem.
