Chicago is one of the largest media markets in the country. The home of deep dish pan pizza, Al Capone and, of course, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, Chicago also has some of the country’s largest newspapers, and is the home base of the major newspaper chain Tribune Company.
- The Chicago Tribune -- The major daily paper for Chicago, the Tribune, which was founded in 1847, is the flagship publication of the national newspaper chain, Tribune Company. Although the paper has, of late been embattled -- Tribune Company has been facing bankruptcy -- the publication remains among the most well-respected and read papers in the country. Over the years the paper’s staffers have won some 24 Pullitzers and such big names as Ring Lardner and Ann Landers once called the paper home.
- Red Eye -- This offshoot of the Tribune was launched in 2004 as a tabloid aimed at a younger demographic, specifically 18 to 34-year-olds.
- The Chicago Sun-Times -- The other major daily in Chicago, the Sun-Times is, actually, older than the Tribune; the Sun-Times launched in 1844. Although the paper went through a period where it was known for its conservative bent, under well known right-y and News Corp owner Rupert Murdoch, it’s returned to a more populist tone now that it is owned by Hollinger International which is now known as Sun-Times Media Group. One of the paper’s best known staffers is the famed movie critic, Roger Ebert.
- Chicagomedia.org -- This blog predominantly hosts listings about media events in Chicago area.
- Harpo -- Oprah’s media company, which houses the various offshoots of the talk show queen’s media empire, including her talk show itself, The Oprah Winfrey Show (which is a unit of Harpo Studios); her radio unit Harpo Radio; and her film studio, Harpo Films.
